Virgin of the Lanterns Audiodescription.

Virgin of the Lanterns

In this religious painting dated in 1928, Julio Romero de Torres used the Mexican model Carmen Gabucio as also in other well-known works. This composition fulfills the baroque idea of this subject and shows the influence of the Baroque Painting School of Cordoba. The Romero de Torres literary painting displays the shelter of Valle-Inclán in the noun figure. The gloomy and lugubrious tones are features of his last period.
The Virgin is dressed with a purple robe and a blue loose-fitting cloak. We see her whole body up front and suspended in the air. Her features are fine. Her hair is long and loose. Her eyes are sweet and show her resigned .. She peacefully looks at the sky. Both her arms are open. She is barefoot and her feet are resting over three heads of angels. Another two angels on each of the top corners of the painting with a female visage meet the Virgin going ahead in the clouds. In the painting lower area, a miniature scene is sketched; the apostles are around the sarcophagus of the Virgin amazed with the Ascension.
The composition is outlined by two feminine figures, one dressed in nuns' wimpl .On the right, sideways, she opens her arms and looks at the virgin, kneeling befote her. The other, wearing a shawl, on the left, crosses her hands on her chest on her black shall. This girl’s features are peaceful and calm, she is looking into space. Romero de Torres gives to it the Cordoba essence: there is a Franciscan nun in one side, and in the other a young girl; that is a concept of symbolist painting: the profane Cordoba and the mystical Cordoba and evokes the hometown of the artist.
The artist wants to create his wishes of Andalusia with the aid of symbols. The title of the work has resonances with Cordoba. It brings to the memory the well-known Cristo de los Faroles (Christ of the lanterns) in the Plaza de los Capuchinos (Capuchin Monks Square). The painting was ordered by the Mayor, José Cruz Conde to place it at the Mosque.
